India has been world-renowned for its dyed and printed textiles since the 1100s. Nine hundred years ago, the designs of these textiles were influenced by the even more antique arts of pottery and stone etching. Blocks of wood (and increasingly, metal) were carved with the desired patterns, dipped into vegetable dyes, and then pressed upon cotton or silk cloths. That process was then repeated until the material of choice was filled with the hand-blocked prints.

With the advent of modern technologies, this age-old technique for adorning textiles has been largely replaced. Sang and Serena see the cultural magnitude of these traditional methods of hand-block dying and printing. They individually select quilts from the Indian state of Rajasthan to import to the United States.

To the eye, the patterns they have picked are rich in their depth. To the hand, the 100% cotton foundations have the texture of an infant’s finely combed hair. The finished product is a natural gem to hold onto.

As with their furniture, Sang and Serena’s first collection of hand-blocked textiles has been entitled SHIVA, after the Hindu deity of benevolent destruction. Six exclusive quilt designs are available in king, queen, and single sizes. Visualize mythical personalities who are still very much present; feel the turmoil of incomplete architectural projects on windy days. Then, let yourself collapse into the safety of a heap of soft bedding. Breathe life into historical tendencies.
